In fiscal terms, we need to consider this when planning on expanding our complex’s communications infrastructure. Within a ten year period, it is not sensible to spend money on new systems every two years, because we planned poorly for our future requirements. It is certainly not cost effective to make snap decisions, which only satisfy one aspect of a communications infrastructure upgrade.
General Options Available
Satellite
At present there is a quote for installation of a satellite subscription television-only
service. This would require several roof mounted reception dishes and does
not take into account any other communication infrastructure requirements.
Complex-wide
There are two major ways of providing a complex wide reception;
Single Receiver – this
would then have its source distributed to all units.
Multiple Receivers – each receiver would service a selection of units
(similar to the current system from broadcast television reception).
The current quote from a Foxtel installation contractor has extremely limiting
conditions. The terms of the contract require the owners corporation pay for
the installation, and then waive any right to use the installed cabling in
anyway other than to distribute Foxtel subscription television. The contract
also states that the owners are responsible for the upkeep of this cabled system
and must never allow the Foxtel service to stop being distributed through the
complex!
Individual Units
Each individual unit owner could mount their own satellite receiver (if required)
to receive services. Some unit holders may not have the correct facing to
be able to mount their own satellite dishes adjacent to their units.
Service Providers
There are many satellite service providers; providing subscription television
and down-stream broadband internet connection. If a complex wide solution
is decided, this would limit unit holders choice of service provider to only
one company (the one chosen to be received by the owners corporation). If
it is left to individual installation, unit holders would be able to take
advantage of choice of service provider based on their needs.
Microwave
Limited Services
There is a limited number of subscription television service channels provided
by microwave off the top of Centrepoint tower.
Cable
Telstra
- Provides the Foxtel subscription television service & Bigpond Broadband
Internet connection (up-stream & down-stream). At this time Foxtel provides
some different subscription television channels to Optus cable (this will change
Nov ’02). The products and services offered by Bigpond Broadband are
slightly different to that of Optus Broadband.
